historic vs. historical

I hate to be a pedant. However, on such a day that includes the inauguration of our country’s first African-American president we should use the best language at our disposal to mark this auspicious moment.

This inauguration is historic and always will be. (that is, it is significant, memorable, important) The events of yesterday, mundane and forgettable, are historical. (objects of the past)

This is obnoxious of me but a pet peeve.

  1. I like having you around to challenge my vocabulary. Otherwise, it might have stopped growing after I was done with Dr. Caulley’s classes. I’ll let you plow through the doctorate-level books, and I’ll just glean the vocabulary from you. 🙂
